Also known as the African Spurred Tortoise, the Sulcata Tortoise, Geochelone sulcata is the largest species of mainland tortoise on the planet and the third largest overall. Their natural habitat is in the southern Sahara Desert, where they burrow into the sand to escape the heat and dryness of the desert during the hottest part of the day.

Sulcata Tortoises have exploded in popularity in recent years thanks to their curious personalities, widespread availability and relatively low cost, but these tortoises can be challenging to take care of due to their exceptionally large size, their specific dietary requirements and the need to recreate their natural environment as closely as possible, but they will nevertheless make very good pets if you’re willing to put in a little work.
