African Pygmy Hedgehogs aren’t the easiest exotic pets to care for, but they’re not the hardest either and they’re certainly well worth the effort. Their name actually refers to a form of small domesticated hedgehog that originated in Africa, not a particular species, so there is some variation between individuals sold as African Pygmy Hedgehogs.
The biggest challenges with these adorable little creatures are providing a big enough enclosure, supplying the right diet and giving the hog enough exercise. In the wild these hogs would happily roam over far larger areas than you might expect from their size, so obesity is often a major problem with captive hedgehogs. However, with a little planning and care it’s perfectly possible to give your African Pygmy Hedgehog everything it needs to live a happy life. And having your pet hedgehog clambering all over you is a wonderful experience that’s impossible to get bored of.
