The Emperor Scorpion (Pandinus imperator) is one of the largest types of scorpion on the planet, and their huge pincers (properly called pedipalps) make them look undeniably fearsome. These scorpions are native to the African rainforests where they live amongst the leaf litter on the forest floor, where it burrows into the topsoil or hides away under rocks.

These are generally regarded to be the best choice for anyone who’s never kept a scorpion before, partly because they’re actually not very dangerous, despite their appearance. Their sting is normally no worse than your average bee sting, and the pedipalps aren’t nearly as powerful as they look. What’s more, Emperor Scorpions are more docile than many scorpion species, and they’re pretty easy to look after, making them brilliant creatures to keep as pets.
