Zebra Finch Care Sheet
The Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia guttata) is a beautiful and adaptable bird native to much of Australasia, and it’s now one of the most popular exotic pets on the market. One reason for this is that Zebra Finches are much easier to care for than many other exotic birds, making them suitable for novice bird keepers with no previous experience.
Zebra Finches are also fairly quiet birds – certainly not silent, but less noisy than many other bird species commonly kept as pets. As a result they can normally be kept in apartments without causing too many issues with the neighbors. That definitely wouldn’t be possible with a bird like a Hyacinth Macaw!
In the wild Zebra Finches are social creatures, often living in large groups. However in captivity they can be kept quite happily in pairs, although keeping them singly is not recommended. Zebra Finches may be tame, but they don’t form particularly strong bonds with their owners and they need other finches of their own species to be happy.
Zebra Finches don’t take up too much space, they’re simple to look after, never too noisy and always very attractive – the perfect exotic pet!
