More than 60% of Americans own a pet of some kind, but most pet owners will never move beyond predictable cats, dogs and goldfish. However more and more people are turning to the far more exciting possibility of exotic pets, which can include everything from parrots to piranhas and chameleons to corn snakes.

It’s important to note that many exotic pets need to be kept in quite specific conditions and can be fairly high maintenance, but you may be pleasantly surprised to find that many are actually much simpler to care for than your average canine companion. Either way, you should definitely make sure you know what an animal will require before you go and buy one, but you certainly shouldn’t be put off by fear of the unknown.
